Sperm is the male reproductive cell and is derived from the Greek word sperma. In the types of sexual reproduction known as anisogamy and its subtype oogamy, there is a marked difference in the size of the gametes with the smaller one being termed the "male" or sperm cell.

During fertilization, the fusion of the nuclei of male gamete with female gamete takes place for formation of zygote. This male gamete is termed as SPERM and the female gamete is termed as OVUM.

This sperm however, forms by the process of spermatogenesis. The sperm cell is the male sex cell whereas the testis is a reproductive organ in the human body which leads to the formation of male sex hormone, termed as TESTOSTERONE.


Any reproductive cells, such as sperm cell (in male) or egg cell (in female) contains haploid number of chromosome (single set of chromosome). When the sperm cell fuses with the egg cell, then zygote is the product formed containing diploid number of cells (two sets of chromosome, one from male, other from the female)
