Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid spermatozoa develop from germ cells in the seminiferous tubules of the testis. This process starts with the mitotic division of the stem cells located close to the basement membrane of the tubules. These develop into mature spermatozoa, also known as sperm cells. So basically you can say that it is the process by which male gametes sperms are produced with the help of primary and secondary reproductive organs.

Answer for Class 12 Biology Students

Spermatogenesis: In testes, the immature male germ cells (spermatogonia) produce sperms by the process called spermatogenesis that begins at puberty.

The flowchart given below explains the process in detail.

Note:

 2n= 46 chromosomes; n= 23 chromosomes

 One primary spermatocyte produces 4 sperms.
