Answer:

The longitude of India spans from 68 degrees 7E to 97 degrees 25E from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh. Thus, the longitudinal extent is that of 30 degrees. The "time difference" between both these places is two hours. (30 multiplied by 4 minutes, as 1 degree equals four minutes, that is equal to 120 minutes or two hours in a thirty-degree span) The standard meridian has been selected as 82° 30' E that passes through "Mirzapur" in "Uttar Pradesh", which is five and half hours ahead of UTC or the Greenwich time. It was only chosen in the year 1906 with Kolkata (Calcutta) time officially existing as a time zone till 1948.

The "Indian Standard Time" (IST) is calculated from this meridian at 82° 30' E to have a constant, standard time for the whole country and to avoid confusion in railway timings, navigation timings, and other things. And also because the distance between longitudes that span India are more than two hours, with Arunachal Pradesh receiving the first daylight two hours earlier than the rest of the country hence, "standard meridian" has been chosen as the "standard time" for India.
