We need a standard meridian for India because of the vast longitudinal extent of the mainland. Thus, there is a time lag of two hours from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, time along the Standard Meridian of India passing through Mirzapur is taken as the Standard time for the whole country.

Standard time is the transpiration of timers within a geographic region or area to a separate time standard, rather than utilizing solar time or a provincially determined time (longitude) to set a regional mean time standard.  India needs a standard time because of the vast longitudinal length of the continent. As a result, there is a time gap of two hours from Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat. Thus, the standard time for India has been taken from Mirzapur for the whole country.
