Static friction is the friction that exists between a stationary object and the surface on which it's resting. A frictional force occurs when you try to push an object alongside a surface. Once the objects have already started moving, kinetic friction takes over.

Static friction is that type of friction which
acts on a body which is stationary. For example when a pen is kept on a table it
is acted upon by static friction. It resists the movement of a still object. When an external force is applied on a still object,
in order to resist the movement of that
object , it increases proportionally with the increase of the external force because static friction is self adjusting.
But finally the static friction reaches a
maximum limit after which it cannot increase further. The maximum value of static friction Is known as limiting friction.
When the external force is further increased, the body starts moving and the friction starts decreasing with increase in external force .This is then
known as kinetic friction
