Static friction is the force of friction that opposes the movement of a stationary object (object at rest).
The static friction is greater than kinetic friction force. As if you apply force to move an object, it increases its static friction force to prevent any motion. But after a certain limit the force applied increase the friction force. This static friction force reaches at its maximum. Then object starts to move and then kinetic friction works on it. This kinetic friction is less then static friction.

The friction that exists when the bodies in contact are at rest with respect to each other is called static friction
