Static friction is the friction that exists between a stationary object and the surface on which it's resting. ... This is the friction that exists between twoobjects moving relative to each other. Kinetic friction isn't as strong as static friction, and so it is easier to keep the couch moving.

Friction :-
It is a type of friction which comes into play when body is at rest and an external force applied on the body . Body try to move over another surface on applying external force . This friction is more in comparison to any other friction .
Fs ∝ N (normal reaction)
Fs = Ms x N
where , Ms = coefficient of static friction . Also defined as the ration of static friction per unit normal reaction .
Example :-
- movement of a box on a floor ( smooth surface )
- dragging sleepers on a concrete road . ( rough surface)
