Static routing is when you statically configure a router to send traffic for particular destinations in preconfigured directions. Dynamic routing is when you use a routing protocol such as OSPF, ISIS, EIGRP, and/or BGP to figure out what paths traffic should take.

A manually configured routing entry, carried out usually by a Network Administrator, by adding entries to a routing table, is called Static Routing.

When information from a dynamic routing traffic is utilised, it is known as Dynamic Routing. Dynamic routes change dynamically when the network is changed or reconfigured.

Static Routing is mostly used as backup in the event of Dynamic Routing failure.
