Stomata are small pores present in the leaf. They are surrounded by guard cells which help in closing and opening of stomata.

Two main functions of stomata are:

1. Exchange of gases (for photosynthesis and respiration)

2. Transpiration (Removal of water from leaf surface)

Guard cells regulate the opening and closing of the stomata and this regulation is brought about by the movement of  water in and out of the guard cells. When water moves into the guard cells, they become flaccid. This causes the outer walls of cells bulge out and vice-versa.

Stomata are actually the tiny pores present on the lower epidermis of leaf, it is surrounded by two kidney shaped guard cells.

Two functions of stomata are as follows :

1. Exchange of gases takes place through it.

2. Transpiration.

Guard cells have thin cappilaries or you can say they are provided with water . So whenever if water flows through these guard cells they get opened and allow stomata to perform its functions. While if water is not there it shrinks.
