Ancient Bengal was the site of several major Janapadas (kingdoms), while the earliest cities date back to the Vedic period. Between the 1204 and 1352, Bengal was a province of the Delhi Sultanate.

The dynasty was founded by the first Nawab of Bengal Murshid Quli Khan.

Shashanka was the first independent king of a unified polity in the Bengal region, called the Gauda Kingdom and is a major figure in Bengali history. He reigned in 7th century AD, some historians place his rule between circa 600 C.E and 636/7 C.E. Whereas other sources place his reign between 590 and 625 C.E.

The name of Bengal or Bangla is derived from the ancient kingdom of Vanga, or Banga. In early Sanskrit literature references to the name of Banga occur, through its early history is almost obscure until the 3rd century BC.
