Some solids vaporise without melting. Such a conversion, i. e, change in state, is know as sublimation.When cooled, the vapours of such substances directly solidify. The solid thus obtained is called a sublimate.

For example :ammonium chloride, naphthalene and iodine.

AN ACTIVITY:

Heat some iodine or solid ammonium chloride in a dry test tube. The solid vapourises without melting . The vapours directly solidify in the colder part of the test tube.
