For understanding to you what is Subordinate clause , understood what is Principal clause because principal cause is related to subordinate clause.

principal \: clause
The clause ,
he \: has \: lost \: the \: book
, makes good sense by itself , and can , therefore , stand alone as a complete sentence . Such a clause is called the Principal clause or Main clause.

Now , what is Subordinate clause ,

Subordinate clause is the type of complex sentence .
It is the dependent for its full meaning upon the principal clause like example of He has lost the book , it is , therefore , called a Dependent or Subordinate clause.
