Subsidiary Alliance is a system of ruling a nation that is under the rule of king. [Lord Richard Wellesley] , that he must allow British forces in the territory he ruled, and that he would not declare war without asking the British first.

Subsidiary Alliance- This was an alliance between an Indian ruler and the British. The British offered to give Indian rulers (called 'princes' by the British) protection. They would supply troops and help the prince if he was fighting a war with another power. Since the British troops were militarily stronger, this was an attractive offer.

Richard Wellesley (Governor General from 1798-1805) introduced the Subsidiary Alliance.
