This type of agriculture is practised to meet the needs of a farmers family. Traditionally low levels of technology and household labour are used to produce on small output (crop).

It is classified into two types: Intensive subsistence and primitive Subsistence farming.

Subsistence agriculture is that agriculture system in which the farmers focus on growing enough food for their entire family . Traditional farming techniques are used .

Example : A family owns only one cow to fulfill the needs of milk  for his family only .

Subsistence agriculture is mainly classified into two categories :-

1. Intensive Subsistence Agriculture

2. Extensive Subsistence Agriculture
