Subsistence crisis - It is an extreme situation where the basic means of livelihood are become scarce. Following are the factors that caused the Subsistence crisis in France during 18th century :
- There was an increase in the population of France from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. It caused a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. However, Production of grains did not increase with that speed. Thus, an increase in the price of bread which was the staple food of the majority experienced.
- Most workers were employed as labourers in workshops. They used to get fixed wages by the owners, wages were not increase to match the rise in prices. It widened the gap between the poor and the rich. Also things became worse for them whenever drought or hail reduced the harvest.
