Subsistence Farming or subsistence agriculture usually implies a particular form of farming in which the crops or livestock harvested are intended for self-consumption of the farmer and his/her family members.Any excess or surplus production is used for sale or trade in the market.

Explanation:

Before the advent and popularization of commercial farming, subsistence farming was the prevalent form of farming in which the farmers mostly focused on self-subsistence.Later on, with the growth of urban centers and industrial societies, agricultural production became increasingly mechanized and specialized which greatly enabled surplus production consequently facilitating agricultural trade both in domestic and international market.Subsistence farming still exists today in many developing and underdeveloped countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where many farms are using primitive and traditional farming methods.
