subsistence farming
agriculture done to support the family of the farmer and not for commercial use is called subsistence farming or agriculture. this type of agriculture is common in the tropical lowlands.
the two types of subsistence farming are:
1.shifting cultivation
slash and burn agriculture or shifting agriculture is practised mainly by tribal people. after 2 or 3 years of producing vegetable and grain crops on a recently cleared piece of land, the migrants abandon it for another newly cleared plot. each time a spot of virgin forest is selected, as it is more productive. trees and bushes are cleared by slashing and the remaining vegetation is burnt. the ashes add potash to the soil. then the seeds are sown after the Rains.
2. intensive subsistence agriculture
in regions where there are large populations to be supported on small farms, agriculture has to be intensive. though it may be for subsistence, a large part of the produce also enters national
trade.
farming is practised on every available price of land to support the dense population. such intensive tillage generates High yields from every square foot of land.
