the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimize surface area.

The phenomenon due to which exposed surface of a liquid contained in a vessel behaves like a stretched membrane is called surface tension.

The surface tension is mainly caused due to unbalanced cohesive force acting near the top surface of liquid.
