Answer:
Surface tension is caused by the effects of intermolecular forces at the interface. Surface tension depends on the nature of the liquid, the surrounding environment and temperature. Liquids where molecules have large attractive intermolecular force will have a large surface tension.

Surface Tension is a perpendicular force which is acting on a imaginary line on the surface of a liquid.
Explanation:
- A bulk particle in a liquid have zero net force but a particle at the surface of liquid is different from bulk particle and have net force not equal to zero.
- Because of absence of one force component the surface of liquid starts stretching then the concept of Surface tension arises. Surface tension depends upon temperature; it decreases with increase in temperature.
- It also depends upon solubility, depends upon force of attraction between particles of liquid and also upon the gas, solid and liquid which is trying to attach to surface, it depends on nature of liquid etc.
