The goal of sustainable development is to meet the needs of today, without compromising the needs of tomorrow. This means we cannot continue using current levels of resources as this will not leave enough for future generations. Stabilising and reducing carbon emissions is key to living within environmental limits.

sustainable development : development should take place in the  present without damaging the environment and the development in the present should not compromise with the needs of the future.

sustainable development is important to ensure the continuity of the resources, if the rates at which natural resources are used is continued then these resources will get depleted and would take millions of years to form, and this would hinder the development in the future.
