sustainable government........

Development is a primary principle around which much of contemporary human civilization is based. One of the great questions and dilemmas of our time is finding a way to create “sustainable development”. Many that have studied sustainability will say that in contemporary culture, sustainable development is an oxymoron.

Government is a complex but central force influencing the broad spectrum of development issues. Government includes political strategies, management, and leadership. Given that the baseline purpose of government is to protect and promote the best interests of the people governed it makes sense that it is necessary that government invest in strategies that in every possible way promote sustainable development.  As we negotiate the various economic, social, and environmental influences and demands of our times we constantly find investing philosophically and institutionally in sustainability is fundamental, critical, and highly consequential action.

Government v. Business
Economic politics are focused intensively on running government like a business. Certainly we live in challenging times and trying to find ways to be more efficient economically are issues that both businesses and governments face. However it is important to realize that the objectives of business are significantly different, or should be, than the objectives of government. Principally, business is about creating profit. Government must be more about creating and protecting wealth. Sustainable governance looks at wealth beyond the singular province of profit. Learning Sustainability teaches us that wealth comes from the environment and people as well as the profit sector.  Governance must find ways to deliver equitable services and wealth to those that are governed. Business is also by its nature a private enterprise. Business is accountable only to shareholders and those shareholders demand profit. Democratic government is accountable to shareholders with different values. Public values. Social well-being. Environmental and ecological integrity. Security.

sustainable development.........

Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human developmentgoals while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem servicesupon which the economy and society depend. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resource use continue to meet human needs without undermining the integrity and stability of the natural system. Sustainable development can be classified as development that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations

While the modern concept of sustainable development is derived mostly from the 1987 Brundtland Report, it is also rooted in earlier ideas about sustainable forest managementand twentieth century environmental concerns. As the concept developed, it has shifted to focus more on economic development, social development and environmental protection for future generations. It has been suggested that "the term 'sustainability' should be viewed as humanity's target goal of human-ecosystem equilibrium (homeostasis), while 'sustainable development' refers to the holistic approach and temporal processes that lead us to the end point of sustainability".[1] The modern economies are endeavouring to reconcile ambitious economic development and obligations of preserving the natural resources and ecosystem, the two are traditionally seen as of conflicting nature. Instead of holding climate change commitments and other sustainability measures as a drag to economic development, turning and leveraging them into market opportunities will do greater good. The economic development brought by such organized principles and practices in an economy is called Managed Sustainable Development (MSD).

The concept of sustainable development has been—and still is—subject to criticism. What, exactly, is to be sustained in sustainable development? It has been argued that there is no such thing as a sustainable use of a non-renewable resource, since any positive rate of exploitation will eventually lead to the exhaustion of earth's finite stock.

Hope it will help you
