A synapse is the coming together of a pre synaptic neuron's terminal button and a post synaptic neuron's dendrite. the close proximity is known as a synapse whereas the space between is known as a synaptic cleft. An electric impulse is created when a stimulus of suitable strenght is recieved at one end and the neurons gets excited. this excitation causes a change in ion concentration between the inside and outside of the axon lemma. Now the impulse is carried forward by shifting membrane potentials. when this reaches the terminal button the synaptic vesicles present in it release acetylcholine ( or some other neurotransmitter like dopamine, Seratonin or glycine ) into the synaptic cleft and this causes a stimulus in the next ( post synaptic ) neuron.
