Syngas, or synthesis gas, is a fuel gas mixture consisting primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and very often some carbon dioxide.

Production methods include steam reformingof natural gas or liquid hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen, the gasification of coal,biomass, and in some types of waste-to-energy gasification facilities.

C + H2O ---> CO + H2

Here CO + H2 is syngas or water gas.

The mixture of CO and H2 is used in manufacturing of methanol and a number of hydrocarbons. So, it is called syngas.

Nowadays syngas is produced from sewage, sawdust, scrap wood, newspaper etc.

The process of preparing syngas from coal is known as "Coal gasification".
