=> A straight line that meets the circle at one and only one point is called Tangent.

=> As it passes through the point where the tangent line and the curve meet, called the point of tangency, the tangent line is "going in the same direction" as the curve, and is thus the best straight-line approximation to the curve at that point.

TANGENT :

  • A line that intersects the circle in exactly one point is called a tangent of a circle.
  • The point at which the tangent intersects the circle is called its point of contact.

In the attachment, SPT is a tangent at the point P of the circle with centre O.

So, we can say that P is the point of contact of the tangent with the circle.
