Family is a group of organisms which have less number of similarities between them in comparison to genus and species. The organisms of same family can be said to be of "closely related genera".

Order is a group of organisms which exhibit less number of similarities than family. The organisms of same order can be said to be of "closely related family".

Class is a category of organisms of "closely related orders".

Phylum or Division is a category which includes organisms of "closely related classes". The phylum is for animals whereas division is for plants.

Kingdom is the highest category and is the assemblage of phylum or division.
