All living organisms in the universe are classified into different groups ,based on their basic and shared characteristics.Grouping system makes it easier to study certain groups of organisms.
Thus , taxonomy is the branch of science which classifies the living organisms into different groups or categories. It is also the branch of science which deals with the identification and naming of the living organisms and organizing the organisms into different groups of classification.
Carolus Linnaeus is known as the father of Taxonomy.

The scientific naming of living organisms is known as binomial nomenclature. There are major 4 conventions followed while writing scientific names :
The name of the genus begins with a capital letter.
The name of the species begin with a small letter.
When printed the scientific name is in italics.
When written by hand ,the genus name and the species name have to be underlined separately.

Example : Homo sapiens is the scientific name of human beings.
