Teflon which is widely used as a nonstick coating in cookware, chemical processing equipment and many other applications is chemically known as polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE. This was created by scientists at the DuPont Corporation in 1938. The unique molecular structure of Teflon has a chain of carbon atoms as the base like all other polymers we know. But in addition, in Teflon the carbon chain is completely surrounded on all sides by fluorine atoms. As carbon and fluorine form very strong bonds, the fluorine atoms in a way protect the carbon chain which is quite vulnerable. The resulting structure gives Teflon all its unique properties. It is an extremely slippery material and inert to almost all known chemicals
