Temperature is a physical quantity expressing hot and cold.

The basic unit of temperature in the International System of Units (SI) is the Kelvin. It has the symbol K. For everyday applications, it is often convenient to use the Celsius scale, in which0 °Ccorresponds very closely to the freezing point of water and100 °C is its boiling point at sea level.

When a substance gets hotter, it expands to a greater volume. Nearly all substances exhibit this behavior of thermal expansion. It is the basis of the design and operation of thermometers. As the temperature of the liquid in a thermometer increases, its volume increases.
