1) The junction of one neuron (nerve cell) and the other neuron is called ‘synapse’.

2) The end of first neuron (pre-synaptic) contains neurotransmitters.

  • It is very important in neuronal function, as it transmits the signals from one neuron or to another.
  • The neuron which from which the signals pass is called pre-synaptic neuron and the one which receives them is post-synaptic neuron.
  • The axonic end of the the pre-synaptic neuron is bulged and is called ‘synaptic knob’.
  • The gap between the pre and the post-synaptic membranes is the 'synaptic cleft'.
  • The end of pre-synaptic neuron contains neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers of the body.
  • They are carried in synaptic vehicles to transmit the signals across.

Note that, synapses are also present between from neurons and muscle cell as well as gland cells.
