12 nautical miles from the shoreline is termed as territorial water. This area comes under the exclusive jurisdiction of a particular country.Foreign entities are allowed but only through permission. It not only covers seawater but also airspace over and seabed below.
Up to 24 nautical miles[nm] from shoreline is known as contiguous area I.e. 12nm(territorial)+ further 12nm.
Up to 200 nautical miles from shoreline is called as Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ or SEZ).
Beyond 200 nm or EEZ is the open sea to which no country can claim and is governed by UNCLOS
