the tectonic plates are not continous and are similar to pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that are continously moving.an earthquake happens when two plates suddenly slip past one another .the surface where they slip is called the fault (or the fault plane).the edges of these plates are rough.so,during the movement ,they sometimes get stuck when the rest of the plates keep moving .when the edges release themseleves, the energy which got confirmed radiates outwards from the faults in the form of sesmic waves. the place on the earth surface directly above the point where the fault begins to rupture is the epicentre of the quake..
