Hey there,
Shifting agricultural is the process of agriculture in which a part of the forest is cleared by cutting the trees and burning them . The Ashes act as fertilisers. Agriculture is done there for a few years and then abandoned when the land loses its fertility. It is also known as slash and burn agriculture.
Nowadays it has been banned. Earlier people used to abandon the part of the infertile land for 25-30 years. During these years the forest regained its fertility. But now the population has increased and so has the need for food. People come back to the same piece of land in a short period and the land doesn't get enough time to regain it's fertility. This leads to soil erosion.
Hope it helps ^_^
