Specific rotation is defined as the rotation produced by a solution of 1 gcm^-3 concentration placed in polarimeter tube of length 1 decimetre for the given wavelength of the light at a given temprature .

Specific Rotation = observed angle of rotation / length of polarimeter tube × concentration of solution in gcm^-3

the angle is known as angle of rotation and generally it is known as observed angle of rotation and is denoted as alpha obs
