14th amendment of US constitution was was ratified on July 9th 1868,and granted citizenship to "all person born or naturalized in the US" which included former slaves recently freed. In addition,it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without doing any process of law or to "deny to any person within its jurisdication the equal protection of laws".By directly mentioning the role of states, the 14th amendment greatly expanded the protection of civil rights to all Americans and is cited in in more litigation than any other amendment.

The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868, as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. The amendment
addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws and was
proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War.
