1. What is the acceleration of a car that moves from a speed of 5.0 m/s to a speed of

15 m/s during a time of 6.0 s? How far does the car travel during that time? (Hint:

either use average velocity, or use the relation d = vit + (1/2)at2

).

By definition,

a =

∆v

∆t

=

15 m/s - 5.0 m/s

6.0 s

= 1.67 m/s2 or 1.7 m/s2

To find the distance traveled, we use

d = vit +

1

2

at2

= (5.0 m/s)(6.0 s) + 1

2

(1.67 m/s2

)(6.0 s)2

= 30.0 m + 30.0 m

= 60.0 m

u=5m/s

v=15m/s

t=6 sec.

a=v-u/t

=15-5/6

=10/6

=1.6666666....

=1.67m/s^2
