Answer: Caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is a strong base:-

1) Red Litmus- Caustic soda changes

the colour of red litmus to blue.

2)Phenolphthalein- Caustic soda turns pink in phenolphthalein.

3)Methyl Orange- Caustic soda changes the colour of methyl orange to golden yellow or simply yellow.

Caustic soda reactivity towards the red litmus, phenolphthalein and methyl orange are as follows:

  • a. Caustic soda reactivity towards red litmus: Caustic soda is known as sodium hydroxide it turns the red litmus into blue colour.
  • b. Caustic soda reactivity towards phenolphthalein: Phenolphthalein is itself a weak acid. So when a proficient amount of sodium hydroxide has been put into the acetic acid, such that there is no longer any interacted acetic acid, the sodium hydroxide will then start reacting with phenolphthalein. The response of phenolphthalein with sodium hydroxide outcomes in a pink solution.
  • c. Caustic soda reactivity towards methyl Orange: Methyl orange turns red in the acidic solution and yellow in the basic solution. Therefore, to renovate it to the yellow colour, the student requires to put in an abundance of the basic solution as sodium hydroxide is a strong base, it can shift the colour of the solution to yellow.
