Benzene when reacts with Cl2 in the presence of AlCl3 forms chlorobenzene. One of the hydrogen of benzene gets substituted by Cl+ and forms chlorobenzene along with HCl as byproduct. The lewis acid acts as a catalyst in the reaction. It forms an anionic complex with Cl- from Cl2 to form AlCl4- and gives Cl+.
