a)  CH4 +Cl2 ---->CH3Cl + HCl The products formed are chloromethane and hydrochloric acid. It is a substitution reaction as a hydrogen is replaced by Cl. b) CH4 + HNO3 -----> No reaction HNO3 is a proton donor. Protons can easily go to double bond or lone pair neither of which is available in CH4. It is also not a good electrophile. So, no reaction occurs.
