Classification of Phenol
We get phenol by substituting OH group in place of H in benzene ring. It can be classified into three types:
• Monohydric phenols: These phenols contain one -OH group. (e.g. o,m,p- cresol)
• Dihydric phenols: They contain two -OH groups. They could be either ortho-, meta- or para- derivative. (e.g. Resorcinol)
• Trihydric phenols: They contain three -OH groups. (e.g. benzene 1,3,5- triol)
