Federalism is a structure of government in which, power is divided into various levels.

Power is divided among central government (for the whole nation) and various other levels, these levels could be subordinate to the central government or may have independent powers.

In some cases* where state governments have independent powers, citizens may exercise dual citizenship.

India is a federation with strong central government, where state governments are subordinate to the centre.

Federalism facilitates proper division of power and prohibits centralisation of authority.

IN INDIAN CONTEXT

The federal mechanism provides two sets of policies, one at regional level and other at National level.

Likewise, people have two sets of identities. ( State/Regional identity and National Identity )

The authority of each level of government is clearly marked by the constitution of India - State List, Union List and Concurrent List.

To prevent conflicts between state and the centre there is an independent judicial system to settle disputes.
