During inhalation the dome shaped diaphragm flattens and the volume of chest cavity increases. As a result air outside rushes into the lungs.
During exhalation the diaphragm relaxes and retains its dome shape. And as a result the volume of chest cavity decreases and air inside the lungs rushes out.

Answer:
It is so because when that volume of chest cavity decreases or expands , oxygen comes in in our body through lungs.... But when it increases the foul air that is carbon dioxide goes out from our body through lungs....
