The AEIOU theory is a model that stresses effective communication as a way of dealing with conflict; each of the letters stands for one communication behavior:

Acknowledge

Express

Identify

Outcome

Understanding

Acknowledge the other side and assume the other people involved in the conflict mean well; express your own feelings; identify what you would like to see happen; express the outcome you would like to see while remaining open to another outcome that may satisfy your needs; and understand that the agreement should be understood and committed to by each person involved. By following each of the steps, conflict can be avoided or minimized.
