Explanation:

  • Ageing can be defined as a time-related deterioration of physiological functions which is necessary for survival and fertility.
  • Ageing can be caused by gradual changes in our body systems and changes in our hormonal levels.
  • Diet and exercise play a very important role in ageing.
  • Various internal, as well as external factors, affect ageing.
  • Maximum life span or life expectancy is different for a particular species.

Theories related to aging:-

1. Shortening of telomeres: Telomere shortening is related to ageing. Telomeres are repeated meaningless sequences present on the end of the chromosomes. Whenever DNA replication takes place the length of the telomere keeps on shortening(DNA polymerase isn't that efficient in replicating the DNA by itself) unless enzyme telomerase is maintaining the length of the telomere.

Some flatworms have the capability of endlessly regenerating their telomere (biologically immortal) but they are susceptible to other external environmental factors hence they die.

The basic length of the telomere of a particular person is inherited from their parents which is in turn related to the life cycle of that particular family. Life expectancy can be reduced if the person has been exposed to some external factors.

2. Ageing caused by ROS: Reactive oxygen species( ROS) can oxidize and damage the cell membrane. This free radical accumulation inside the cell can lead to ageing. ( eg. Parkinsons)

Catalase can destroy ROS thus increasing the life expectancy by 30-40%.
