It's just a simple difference same as between addition and multiplication....as...While...adding we get result in vector but on multiplying we get result in...Constant...which is a no. generally...for eg..A=2i+3j.......B=3i+4j
A+B=(2i+3j)+(3i+4j)
A+B= 5i+7j

Now...for multiple...
A*B=(2i+3j)(3i+4j)
A*B=6+12=18. (I*i=1...I*j=0)
