Current direction is from positive terminal of battery to its negative terminal.. (or we can say from higher voltage(potential) to lower voltage)

A single wire carrying current does have magnetic effect, but it doesn't have north or south poles..

However a current carrying wire in the form of coil has north and south polarity. These are electromagnets.

The end where all the magnetic field lines enter the coil is south poke and the end from where all the magnetic field lines emerge is north pole.
