Gradient is a vector feild defined on scalar feild .. for example a river is scalar feild(water has no direction) but what makes it to flow are so many vectors take a velocity vector for example.. so all those velocity vector add up form gradient.. the temperature is itself a scalar but a temperature gradient tells us in which rate and with which manner the temperature is will rise and heat will spread or travel ( as wee se in weather forecast)
