Dalton's Atomic Theory:-

1) All matter is made of atoms. Atoms are indivisible and indestructible.

2) All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties

3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.

4) A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms.

Dalton's atomic theory

John Dalton proposed the atomic theory in 1807 for the study on atoms and for finding out how matter has been formed. The views put forward by John Dalton were based on logical thinking . These were not supported by any experimental observations or scientific evidences. Yet this theory could logically explain the basic ideas regarding the formation of substances and its characteristics.

The major ideas of atomic theory:

  • matter is made up of minute particles called atoms.
  • atoms cannot be divided during chemical reaction. Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed.
  • atoms of the same elements are identical in properties , size and mass.
  • atoms of different elements differ in their properties and mass
  • atom is the smallest particle that can take part in chemical reaction.
  • compounds are formed when atoms of two or more elements combine in a simple ratio.
