Atomicity
Explanation:
Atomicity is defined as the total number of atoms constitute a molecule.
Division of molecules on the basis of atomicity
- Monoatomic - It isconsistof 1 atom e.g. He, Ne, Ar
- Diatomic- It is consist of 2 atoms e.g. H₂ , N₂ , O₂
- Triatomic- It is consist of 3 atoms e.g. O₃
- Polyatomic- It is consist of 3 or more atoms e.g. P₄ , S₈
Example of CH₄
Molecular mass= (1 × Atomic mass of carbon) + (4 × Atomic mass of hydrogen)
= [1 (12.011 u) + 4 (1.008 u)]
= 12.011 u + 4.032 u
= 16.043 u
