Answer: Pedar.

Explanation:

The baker was also called Pedar in Goa during  the Portuguese. It still continues to charm the people of Goa with its loaves. The mixers, moulders and furnaces are still in place. The jingling thud of the bamboo stick which made people wake up from their sleep can still be heard in few parts of the  village.

It is also known as BOI or sweet bread and holds an important place in the the Goanese culture and tradition. It is an integral part in marriage gifts.   During the Portugese era these bakers would wear a frock extending to  knee-length referred as ‘kabai’ which later changed to shirt and trousers  which was a bit shorter in length than the earlier ones. They used to collect their dues  at the end of each month.

Hope this helps.
