The basic reason for the alpha particle experiment on gold foil was to study the atom and its interior structure. He concluded by this experiment that:
1.Most of the space in the atom was empty, as many Rays passed undeviated.
2.Their is a positive charge in atom concentrated at the centre (Nuclues around 10^-10)
Well... This was main motive of Rutherford...!!
